Debian install kde 4.2

Configuring the screenlocker The screenlocker can be configured in a similar way to SDDM by installing the kde-config-screenlocker package. This adds a new Screen Locking section to your system settings where you can configure things like the keyboard shortcut to lock the screen, the background image, the media controls, the no-password grace period after locking, and when the system should lock itself.

This process is explained in-depth, with KDE-specific notes where relevant, on the plymouth page. In short, you can add Breeze theme for Plymouth by installing the plymouth-theme-breeze package, and add a section to your system settings for setting the boot splash by installing the kde-config-plymouth package.

Color profiles and color management The colord-kde package provides a Color Corrections section to your system settings that allows you to calibrate your display devices to use a specific color profile, either imported or from a preset list.

This is especially useful for graphic artists and those that work in the print industry. This package is currently only available in Debian Experimental and as such, is only recommended for advanced users comfortable with enabling and using packages from the experimental repo.

If you want to enable this repository and use this package, read DebianExperimental , which contains a long list of both warnings and instructions. Native LibreOffice icons and theming If the libreoffice-kde5 package is installed, it will be automatically loaded by LibreOffice when it's run in a KDE Plasma environment and fit to your system theme, along with using native Qt dialogs for opening and saving files.

If you're using the Breeze Dark theme, the icons may have poor contrast. This is a safe way to return to your default configuration without outright deleting any files. Show debugging information When reporting a bug with KDE, or asking for support in the community, you may want to attach information about your environment. The easiest and most comprehensive way to do this is to run: qdbus org. See also Interested in helping?

Wiki Login. It includes a few non-KDE applications: firefox , gimp , orca. If you do not do this, some services might still be vulnerable after a security upgrade. The reason for this is that daemons that are running before an upgrade might still be using the old libraries before the upgrade [10]. From Debian Jessie and up, you can install the needrestart package, which will run automatically after each APT upgrade and prompt you to restart services that are affected by the just-installed updates.

In earlier releases, you can run the checkrestart program available in the debian-goodies package manually after your APT upgrade. Some packages like libc6 will do this check in the postinst phase for a limited set of services specially since an upgrade of essential libraries might break some applications until restarted [11]. Bringing the system to run level 1 single user and then back to run level 3 multi user should take care of the restart of most if not all system services.

But this is not an option if you are executing the security upgrade from a remote connection like ssh since it will be severed.

Excercise caution when dealing with security upgrades if you are doing them over a remote connection like ssh. A suggested procedure for a security upgrade that involves a service restart is to restart the SSH daemon and then, immediately, attempt a new ssh connection without breaking the previous one. If the connection fails, revert the upgrade and investigate the issue.

Security update of the kernel. First, make sure your kernel is being managed through the packaging system. If you have installed using the installation system from Debian 3. If your kernel is not being managed you will see a message saying that the package manager did not find the file associated to any package instead of the message above, which says that the file associated to the current running kernel is being provided by the linux-image Here you need to choose which desktop environment to install.

The installation process will take couple of minutes to install and during the installation process, you may get a prompt where it will ask you to choose which display manager to choose to run and manage the KDE desktop if you have multiple desktop managers installed. I have that case and I choose the lightdm. Select the display manager to finish the installation. Once the installation is complete, the tasksel will close and return to the regular terminal.

And that is it. The entire installation process is automatic, no prompts during the installation. All methods are pretty simple and easy to use in order to install KDE plasma on Debian. In the end, you choose which method you prefer and more familiar with. But again, please note, your mileage may wary and it may not turn out so easy and with no issues.

Always a good idea to test the setup on a virtual machine before you decide to install it on your daily driver. Tags: Debian desktop kde. Your email address will not be published. Deploy WordPress on Docker using Ansible. Deploy Nextcloud on Docker using Ansible.
