Unfortunately, over time this filler often caulk will fail, allowing moisture to infiltrate the siding. Eventually, the siding will terminate into a corner board, brick moulding, or other obstacle. After the siding has been trimmed to fit, it is important to maintain the gap from the siding to the obstacle recommended by the manufacturer.

These joints are then sealed and painted. In most cases, it is very important to use a high quality, exterior caulk or other sealer that is paintable. Sealing fiber cement is required for most products, and paint is usually the best sealing method. Typically any high quality exterior paint will work with fiber cement, but it is strongly recommended to apply primer first. One reason is because fiber cement siding is usually the color of cement, which is a gray color.

In most cases, primers and sealers are available in light shades, facilitating light colored paint. Fiber cement siding is also porous, so it will usually soak up some of the first layer. In modern construction, fiber cement siding is often the go-to choice for upscale homes, but it can be found virtually anywhere.

Fiber cement siding is considered one of the longest lasting exterior materials available, along with brick. Like many siding materials, regular maintenance is required for fiber cement siding to retain its performance and appeal.
